DISCUSSION
For my project I participated as a medical
volunteer for the prestigious law enforcement race called Baker to
Vegas. I had to attend planning meetings and trainings ahead of time as
well as memorize medical protocols. At the two-day race, I staged at a checkpoint
and assessed every incoming runner to provide medical clearance. My project
went very well for me. I had the opportunity to medically clear most
runners and to provide emergent medical care to several runners. I also
had the opportunity to meet law enforcement officers from around the world and
medical volunteers from around the country! Not only did I spend a lot of time planning and preparing for
the project before the race, but I volunteered at my checkpoint for almost the
entirety of the two-day event assessing runners. Therefore, I feel there
was extensive service provided. As for the learning, even though I had a
lot of medical training previous to my project I feel the learning was extensive because I had to attend trainings and memorize medical
protocols. On top of that, I feel I had a great deal of experiential
learning! I loved my project!
