B. ABSTRACT
Baker
to Vegas (B2V) is the worlds most prestigious law enforcement foot race and is
held yearly in the springtime. This
spring the race will be held on March 28th and 29th. B2V is a two-day event covering 120 miles of
pavement with the start line in Baker, California and the finish line in Las
Vegas, Nevada. Every year the race is
dependent upon amazing volunteers and sponsors who donate time and money to
help organize the race. For my community
based EDGE project I would like to volunteer my time to help support law
enforcement officers who are important members of our community. I will be a medical support staff volunteer
where I will use my Advanced-EMT certification and skills to assess the runners
in the race as they reach my checkpoint.
I will be responsible for attending pre-race meetings and preparing by
memorizing a written protocol book, which will outline medical cares I can give
under a licensed physician. Baker to
Vegas offers amazing opportunity to witness law enforcement officers across the
world come together to compete. These
officers risk their lives everyday they wear their uniform to promote public
safety and security, and I look forward to standing in support of them and what
they do for my own community. This
project is a unique way to become involved with the community while training me
for my nursing career.
C. PROJECT DETAILS
1) Explain how the project connects with your personal
motivations and career aspirations.
I
have worked within healthcare for over eight years and currently work in the
Emergency Department and for the county ambulance. I am fascinated with emergency care. This race allows me to be the frontline for
emergency care if needed. Also I love to
run and hope to complete a marathon someday so it will be exhilarating to see
the runners as they reach each checkpoint in the race. If all that was not enough background into
why I love this project, I also have many family members who are law
enforcement officers including my husband who aspires to be a highway patrolman
in the future. Therefore I am overjoyed
with the opportunity to volunteer my support to the law enforcement officers
who will compete in B2V.
I
am a nursing major and will experience valuable things with this project. This project gives me the chance to use my
skills and serve others, which is important for my career. I am excited with how much this project
connects with my personal motivations and career aspirations.
2) Explain how the project ties in with the concepts of
community engagement.
A
community is not just one person; it is many people striving together to better
themselves and where they live. A major
contributing factor to a healthy and happy community is supporting your
community members. For my project I will
be standing in support of law enforcement officers everywhere. Law enforcement officers hold honor and
sacrifice much as they help promote the safety and security of the general
public. This project allows me a small
opportunity to give back to them by supporting and showing my respect and
thanks for what they do for me and for my community.
3) Provide a timeline for
completion of each step in the project.

**B2V pays for one “fancy” meal for Friday March 27, and
reasonably priced food expenses for all other meals.
I will keep all my receipts for the above items (with
exception to the hotel which is pre-paid for by B2V) and turn them in after the
race to be reimbursed.
5) Explain how your personal
strengths will help you complete your project.
My EDGE project will use many of my work
related strengths as I volunteer as a medical support staff. My past has taught me the value of hard work,
responsibility, and dependability. These
personality traits will help me work towards the completion of my EDGE project. Through my experiences I have gained the
capability to excel in preforming patient assessments and first aid. My strengths will help promote me to be a
successful and beneficial medical volunteer for the Baker to Vegas race.
6) Explain how you will overcome
your personal weaknesses and outside threats to complete your project.
My
life is quite busy as it is presently being filled with two full time jobs,
full time classes at SUU, and a family at home.
My lifestyle may potentially present obstacles as I work to complete my
EDGE project. I will need to dedicate
many hours towards my EDGE project, therefore I will prepare by working on my
time management skills. With better time
management skills I will not only succeed as a medical volunteer, but my busy
life won’t interfere with my project.
